Le Stagioni

The title of this solo exhibition refers to Vivaldi’s four violin concerti, Le quattro stagioni. About three years ago Rolph began this series on his signature Triplewall plastic sheets, drawn to the music’s structure and feeling. The works are emotive, celebratory compositions that emerged from listening to Vivaldi in his London studio. Le Stagioni comprises paintings that evolved over this period—through listening, contemplation, and response to timeless music. Rolph is widely known for the spirit of his inquiry in painting, creating overtly pictorial, spatially generous compositions that arouse curiosity and wonder through imagination, a distinctive use of colour, new geometries, and a steadfast belief in the power of visual discovery.
